Obituary for Laurence "Larry" Petersen

Laurence “Larry” Petersen, age 76, of Highland, IN, formerly of Racine, WI, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at home, with family at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Karen Petersen; son, Douglas Petersen; daughters Tanya Petersen and Lori (Robert) Chen; son-in-law, Michael Hullinger; Grandchildren: Hanna, Makenna, and Gabriella Hullinger; Jake, Logan, Andrew, and Meghan Chen; Sister, Karen (late Don) Riggenbach; Brother, Robert (Sandy) Petersen; In-laws: Bonnie (late James) Gast, William (Kate) Gast, Ronald Gast, and Donald Gast; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Zachary Hullinger; parents, Arthur and Verna Petersen; and mother-in-law, Myrtle Gast. Larry graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Civil Engineering. He then joined the Army Reserves and decided to pursue Special Forces. He graduated from jump school as a member of the 82nd airborne and became a Green Beret. He retired from the EJ&E Railroad after 30 years of service. Spending time outdoors was his passion. He spent many years in the local canoe club and enjoyed working in his yard as well. He especially liked spending time with the grandchildren, attending their sporting events, and taking road trips with them. They will miss their Papa dearly. He lead an exemplary life. He was a man of great patience, few words, but much understanding. He was very generous with love and compassion for his fellow man. The people's lives he touched will forever be enriched. Mr. P's legacy will continue in part by those fortunate enough to have known him. Visitation will be held at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 2828 Highway Ave, in Highland on Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 2-6pm. Funeral services will be held directly at St. Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Dr, in Dyer on Monday, February 19, 2018, with visitation from 10am until the time of service at 11am. Fr. Charles Niblick officiating. Burial at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
> In lieu of flowers, donations to Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago can be made in memory of his grandson, Zachary. In the Racine area, donations to St. Catherine’s High School would be appreciated.
