Obituary for Charles Frederick Matulis

Matulis, Charles Frederick, 83, of Highland lost his long battle with congestive heart failure on December 28, 2018. His Savior and the love of his life, Lucy, were there to meet him.
Charles was born in East Chicago, IN, to Charles and Julia Matulis on September 4, 1935. He attended Roosevelt High School in East Chicago, IN, graduating in 1953. He went on to attend the University of Michigan on a football scholarship from 1953-1957. He married his high school sweetheart, Lucy Balestra, on June 16, 1956, at Immaculate Conception church in East Chicago. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1957 with a degree in Economics. He went on to work for over 30 years in management at NIPSCO in Hammond, IN. He spent the last few years of his working life at Argonne National Laboratories in Lemont, IL.
Charles is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucy, his parents Charles and Julia Matulis, and his irreplaceable four-legged friend, Archie.
Charles will be forever missed by his surviving children, Mary (Gary) Heskett of Indianapolis, Roseanne Mallaro, Michael (Suzanne) Matulis, both of Medina, MN. Julianne (Ben) Brown of Westfield, IN. He is also survived by grandchildren Robert, Matthew, and Nicholas Heskett, Jack and Kara Mallaro, Nina and Maya Matulis, and Allison and Morgan Brown, who brought him the greatest joy. He was so proud of all of them. In addition, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Balestra, who was there for him unconditionally after the death of his wife. He is also survived by his siblings Margaret (John) Balazs, Ruth Homco, and Norbert (Karen) Matulis, and many nieces and nephews.
Charles, known to most as Chuck or Chuckles, was a jovial man who’s love for family was immeasurable. He cherished his annual fishing trips to Chief Lake with his son, brother, brother-in-law, grandsons, and nephews.
His second love was the Michigan Wolverines and there weren’t many days he wasn’t sporting Michigan apparel. He loved to cook, hunt, fish, watch sports, and enjoy a cold beer and a fine shot of Brandy.
