Obituary for William Charles Jantzen

William Charles Jantzen passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Copper Trace Retirement home in Westfield, IN. He is survived by his faithful wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Louise (Erler) Jantzen, his brother Carl Jantzen and sister Patricia Shivley. Bill and Betty, as they are affectionately known, are parents to six children and their collective spouses, Jim and Amy Jantzen, Tom Jantzen, Judy and Gary Crawford, Lisa and Kevin Creighton, Bev and Darren Nathan, and Jenny and Eric Wright. They have sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren too numerous to name. Although Betty and Bill both have a high school education, all six of their children went on to graduate from college. God truly has blessed the Jantzen family.
Bill was born on March 11, 1929 in Calumet City, IL the son of Ernest and Helen Jantzen. He grew up in Hammond, Indiana graduating from Hammond Technical High School in 1947 where his love for basketball began. In 1950 he joined our Nation’s naval forces and served as a Third Class Petty Officer Electrician on the USS Fulton. He also was a key player on the ship’s basketball team. His fond memories of his time in service lived on as he faithfully attended Navy Reunions for many years in his retirement. He met the love of his life on a blind date. They soon married on September 19, 1954 and made their home in Highland, Indiana were they lived and raised their six children. Bill worked for US Steel as an electrical expert for 30 years. Upon his retirement, he took a position as a maintenance supervisor at Purdue Calumet where he worked an additional ten years. The Jantzen family often packed up their station wagon and pop-up camper to travel the country visiting almost 40 states. Bill was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. Most Tuesdays he enjoyed playing golf or dart-ball depending on the season. He was an Elder at Redeemer Lutheran Church where he and Betty faithfully served for many years. Every Sunday Bill corralled all six children in the front pew while Betty played organ in the balcony. Bill loved his family greatly and upon retirement he and Betty enjoyed traveling to visit all of their many grandchildren. Bill enjoyed fishing, sports, camping, and politics. He was a devoted Republican and enjoyed a spirited debate any chance he got. Bill was a faithful husband, father, and grandfather. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all.
Funeral services will be held this Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Kennedy Avenue in Highland, IN. The visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00am with the funeral service directly following at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Worship Anew or Redeemer Lutheran Church.
