Obituary for Alex J Gacsala

March 23, 2018 at 6:19pm, surrounded by his family, Alex Joseph Gacsala, 80, of St. John, IN, peacefully went to be with the Lord.
Alex will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Karen. They married November 16, 1968. Also, his daughters; Alyssa (Dan) Black of Crown Point, IN and Erica (Randy) Smith of Kentland, IN and grandchildren; John (Caitlyn), Hannah, Emma, Matthew, Riley, Elaina and his namesake, Alex Charles. Alex proudly raised his family with strong Catholic values and faith. He sacrificed to afford a catholic education for his daughters and make it possible for Karen to stay home with them.
After earning his bachelor’s degree from Ball State University and his master’s degree from Purdue University, Alex touched many lives as an educator at Highland High School then Crete Monee. He was a kind and soft-spoken man. Alex always had time to answer a question, give advice or solve a problem no matter how small. He is remembered with admiration by many.
Alex was a very active member of Holy Trinity Hungarian Catholic Church, the parish council, Knights of Columbus Council 1700 in East Chicago, the Model T Club of Indiana and in his youth served in the Army National Guard.
Alex was a life long antique and classic car enthusiast. He collected nearly anything old or rusty that he could get his hands on restoring its natural beauty. He took so much pride and enjoyment in his antique cars, gas pumps and scooters. These hobbies allowed him to build friendships with people across the country.
Alex is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth (Eugene) Pospychala, two nieces and one nephew
Services will be held at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home 8580 Wicker Avenue, St. John, IN. Visitation, Tuesday, March 27, 2018 2pm – 8pm with prayers lead by the Knights of Columbus at 7pm. Funeral services will begin Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 9:30am with prayer at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, funeral service to follow at 10am at St. Joseph’s Church 440 Joliet Street, Dyer, IN and burial services will conclude at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
