Angel Barreto, 92, of Glenwood, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025. Born on March 12, 1933, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Angel has now been reunited with his beloved wife and the love of his life, Monse Barreto, whom he missed dearly.
Angel was born to Natividad and Dionisio Barreto and was raised with strong family values that stayed with him throughout his life. He built a life centered on love, loyalty, and devotion to his family. Together with Monse, he raised two children, Dianese and Angel Jr., creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring bonds.
Angel was preceded in death by his eternal love, Monse; his parents, Natividad and Dionisio; and his siblings, Nilda Torres, Fernando Barreto, and Orlando Barreto.
He is survived by his brother, Nestor Barreto; his loving children, Dianese Schafer and Angel Barreto Jr.; his son-in-law, Joe Schafer; and his daughter-in-law, Gloria Barreto. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Govanni McCall, Ronald Sherrod Jr., Marshall Alcorn Jr., Melissa Chavez, and Michael Chavez (children of Dianese); and Angel Barreto III and Jazmine Dantzler (children of Angel Jr.); as well as four great-grandchildren: Charles McCall, Abbigail Chavez, Parker Dantzler, and Harrison Dantzler.
Angel was also blessed with an enormous number of nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly and held close to his heart.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 10:30 AM, at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave in St. John, Indiana. Burial to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Angel’s memory to the Hospice of the Calumet Area.
