Anthony J. Velligan, age 99, of St. John, IN, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026. Tony was born on June 24, 1927 to Anton and Theresa (nee Rajnak) Velligan, both deceased. He was raised in Indiana Harbor, East Chicago, IN. Tony honorably served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a graduate of East Chicago Washington High School and went on to earn both his Bachelor and Master’s Degrees from Indiana State University. Tony worked for twelve years at Union Carbide Corporation in the Accounting Department before teaching for thirty years in Business Education at Hammond Technical High School in Hammond, IN. Tony was very active, coached little league baseball, and loved camping, fishing, and visiting with friends and family. He was a member of the VFW, #369, and enjoyed working with patriotic essay contest for a number of years, the American Legion, helping out with their fish fries, the Knights of Columbus, and a longtime of St. John Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores (nee Michalski) Velligan and his brother, Raymond Velligan. He is survived by his four children: Jeffrey (Terry) Velligan, Cheryl (Tony) Krupa, Kenneth (late Laura) Velligan, and Dawn Allen; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, brother Robert Velligan, and many nieces and nephews. He will be truly missed.
Funeral services will begin with visitation directly at Our Lady of Grace Church, 3025 Highway Ave, in Highland from 9:45 am until the time of mass at 10:30 am. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City.
