Arthur Lukas Obituary

Arthur J. Lukas, age 91, of Hammond, Indiana, passed away Tuesday August 11, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Mary Jane; children Paul Lukas, Jim Lukas, Mary Beth Lukas, Linda Murunga (Maurice), and Lisa Lukas; grandchildren Ruby Matheny; great-grandchildren Leona and Stella Matheny. He is preceded in death by parents Joseph and Rose; siblings Betty Szarmach, Gloria Pastuszak, Norbert Lukas, Jerry Lukas, and Diane Bettle.

Art was a Private in the US Army and Veteran of the Korean War, where he received 3 bronze stars. He was a member of the American Legion and supported many Veterans groups. Art was also a fireman for the city of Hammond, Local 556, for 20 years. In addition, he worked for Pullman Standard as a tool crib attendant, and retired from St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond/Dyer where he worked as a handyman/painter.

Art was an avid Mr. Fix-it who could build or repair almost anything. As a husband and father, he worked hard to provide for his family, and will always be our hero. Art was a humble man who didn't know quite how much he was valued. He never looked or acted his age, and his sharp mind and witty sense of humor will be greatly missed. Arthur will live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate to have had him in their lives.

A burial service will be held at 11 am on Friday August 14 at Elmwood Cemetery, 1413 169th St., Hammond, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, Pets for Vets, and Veterans Defense Project
