Betty Lou (Stephen) Sims

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Betty Lou Sims (nee Stephen), passed away on September 4, 2024.  She was 90 years old.  She was born on February 23, 1934, to Michael and Catherine (Sutter) Stephen.  Our Mother married the love of her life, Rex E. Sims, on July 11, 1953.  They were married 59 years. 

A loving Mother and homemaker, Betty was an exceptional cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family, especially during the holidays.  Betty was admired by family and friends for her devotion as a selfless caregiver to her Son, Dan, and later her Husband, Rex.  She deeply cherished and loved every moment she spent with her grandchildren; they gave her such joy.   Betty had many hobbies such as sewing, crocheting beautiful blankets and mastering complicated puzzles.

She is survived by three children: Eugene (Patricia) Sims, Hebron IN, David (Susan) Sims, Waveland IN and Cheryl Lynn (Steven) Salatas, Schererville IN, seven grandchildren: Charlene (Ronald) Horton, Pamela (Ramon) Rocha, Laura (Craig) Gard, Melissa (Jeremy) Skinner, Jennifer (Brian) Childers, Joshua (Brooke) Sims, Leanne (Frederick) DiParvine, eight great grandchildren: Cassidy and Lewis Skinner, Patty and Broderick Horton, Brenda Rocha, Grant and Sylvie Gard, Shelby DiParvine and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her Husband Rex E. Sims, her Son Daniel M. Sims, her Parents Michael and Catherine Stephen, Brothers: Albert, Joseph, Lawrence, Walter, Robert and Roy Stephen, Sisters: Lucille Grau, Rita Meyers and Margaret Baumgartner. 

The family would like to thank Unity Hospice and Palliative Care. Their compassion and dedicated care from all of their staff for our Mother was deeply appreciated. 

Betty leaves behind many close friends and loving family members that are astonished at her inner strength, endurance and grace.  We were truly blessed to have been part of her life.  We will have peace and hold you dear to our hearts knowing that you are reunited with your devoted Rex and your beloved Son Dan. 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, with a brief visitation at 9:30 am with the funeral Mass at 10:00 am at St. Helen Church in Hebron IN with Rev. David Yankauskas, OMV officiating.  The burial will be at Hebron Cemetery.  Visitation will be at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave, (Rt 41) St. John, IN on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024, from 2:00 - 8:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm.
