Herb E. Schumann, 89, peacefully passed away on December 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hammond, Indiana to Herbert and Helen (Helfen) Schumann, he grew up in Griffith, Indiana, where he developed a deep sense of community and family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Catherine (Kay), his sister Marilyn Stein, and his sister Gayelyn (Ray) Hengel. Herb leaves behind a large and loving family, including his children and grandchildren: Margaret "Peg" (Peter) Ippolito, Pam Schumann, Lisa (John) Gialamas, Brian (Karen) Schumann, Scott (Jennifer) Schumann, Lynette (Chris) Zielinski, Paul (Nicole) Schumann, Sandy (Don) Gausselin, Cathy (Jeremy) Zahn, and Bridget (Tim) Pollard, along with 28 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild-Tori, Morgan, Matthew, Alyssa, Madeline, Ellie, Marisa, Sophie, Cameron, Abbie, Kendall, Nate, Taylor, Gwen, Grantham, Gavin, Isabella, Claire, Carter, Emily, Hudson, Lucy, Parker, Conrad, Charlie, Bennett, CC, George and Thomas.
In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his infant son, Johnny, and his brother, Robert "Bob" Schumann.
Herb devoted 48 years of his life to being a State Farm Agent and served on the boards of various organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, St. James Church, St. Peter and Paul Church, Serra Club, and Andrean High School. He was also a proud member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs.
Beyond his professional and community commitments, Herb was known for his generous spirit, always making time to assist friends and family, which brought him immense joy. He and his wife, Kay, cherished the moments spent with their ten children and twenty-eight grandchildren, creating a legacy of love and togetherness. They enjoyed countless family birthdays, pool and holiday parties. They enjoyed many vacations including Orange Beach, South Carolina, Ireland, Hawaii and the beloved Cottage.

Visiting will take place at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave in St. John, on Friday, January 2, 2026 from 2-7 pm. Funeral services will be held directly at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish, 8303 W Taft St in Merrillville on Saturday, January 3, 2026 with visiting from 10:30 am until the time of mass at 11am. Entombment to follow at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Crown Point.
