James H. Thomas Jr., age 84, of Dyer, IN, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Sharon; daughter Cheryl (Walt) Alfred; grandchildren Lauren (Jeremy) Levin, Ashley (Mario) Fuenes, Andrew (Bailey) Alfred, Miranda (Kyle) Thomas, James Doeing, and Maddy Smith; great grandchildren Sam, Alora, Tristan, Charlotte, Leah, and Jack; sister Nancy (late Larry) Vassar; brother Chuck (Sue) Thomas; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members. Jim was preceded in death by his parents James Thomas Sr. and Elizabeth Thomas, and his daughter Caren Thomas.
As per his wishes, Jim will be cremated and a private burial will be held at Memory Lane Cemetery.
Jim was a member of the Lions Club in Dyer, the Masons Griffith Lodge 735, and was a trustee on the Dyer town council. He was a skilled ironworker who helped build many of the famous skyscrapers in Chicago. Not to be forgotten, are the seventeen years that Jim spent serving the public as a volunteer firefighter. Jim also raced for NASCAR in Daytona Beach, and was a founding member of the Dyer Historical Society. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dyer Historical Society in Jim's honor.
