Ken Nitz Obituary

Ken Nitz (78) of Schererville was called home on September 3rd, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife Lynn, daughters Dawn (Jeff Levinson), Amy, and Sara (Michael Lee), grandchildren (Emma, Josh, Matthew, Cora, and Brynn), brother Eugene (Phylis Nitz), and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Gene and Stephany Nitz of Munster and nephew Darrel Nitz.

Ken grew up in Hammond and courageously enlisted in the US Army, serving in Vietnam as a Sergeant in the 1st Aviation Brigade. After being honorably discharged, he dedicated 35+ years as a Brick Mason at Inland Steel.

Outside of work, he was a Parrot Head and a long-suffering fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. His happy place was the water: fishing, scuba diving, boating, waterskiing, and flinging his passengers off water tubes. Nature was no obstacle for him: whether it was hunting deer or mushrooms, stargazing, target shooting, stormwatching, or gardening, he was a pro and happily passed his knowledge down to the next generation. A weekend project was never out of the question. His sharp mathematical and engineering mind combined with his inability to settle for less than perfection made it so his creations still stand strong.

There was a specialty in his cooking. His seasoned ribs, smoked fish, and venison jerky created unforgettable scents of home. His pumpkin pie and banana bread will forever be legendary in the family circle.

Ken was eternally youthful and lighthearted. Animals were drawn to his quiet, patient, kind, and gentle nature. He was fiercely protective, endlessly generous, and always there to help family, friends, and community. Ken was not only a loyal husband, but also a dedicated father who put his family above all else. He was deeply loved and will live in our hearts forever.

The family invites you to share cherished photos for a memorial slideshow.
