Lowell “Grandpa” Allen Pettit, age 86, a cherished and loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend known for his kind, loving, warm, and humorous personality, left us on February 27, 2025. Born on October 22, 1938, on an Iowa farm, Lowell lived a life filled with devotion to his family and friends. He was known as Grandpa by many – a role he served with pride and commitment.
Grandpa is survived by his devoted son, George Pettit and daughter-in-law, Dawn "Cricket" Reynolds Pettit; daughter-in-law, Dawn Plestina; grandchildren: Lanie (Tyler) Pettit, John Andrew Pettit, Noah Pettit, Riley Pettit, Bridgette (Anthony) Rocha, and Chris (Mariana Gonzalez) Clough; great grandchildren: Henry, Elise, Crystal, Alondra, Camden, Dominic, Briana; brother Larry Pettit, and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Karren Pettit, daughter Susan Clough, son John Pettit, son-in-law Pat Clough, brother, Gerald Pettit, and sister-in-law, Alma Jean Pettit.
The youngest of three brothers born to Vida Zahina, Lowell would travel from his small town Iowa farm to pursue his passion for the arts in Chicago. He studied at the Art Institute and would later receive an associate’s degree in applied sciences. While in Chicago, he met his future wife, Karren, and they would settle into suburban life, raising three wonderful children.
He proudly served his country with the Air Force, and while he rarely talked about his time in the war, he never missed attending a veterans day program with one of his grandchildren or donating to many organizations that supported veterans. He also worked as a tool and die maker and other companies over the years, combining his artistic side with his scientific abilities.
Grandpa was a dedicated and active father and grandfather, never missing a chance to be a part of his family’s lives, including being a scout leader, attending dance recitals, school programs, soccer matches, swim meets, softball games and was the best chauffeur ever, safely transporting kids to and from practices, appointments and activities. You could also find him playing board games or chess matches with one of his grandchildren.
He began woodcarving as a hobby, one which would win him awards and showcases at events and libraries. He shared his works of art with others and anyone who received one of his creative pieces felt honored and inspired by him. He remained an active member of the Midwest Carvers Association until the time of his passing.
In lieu of flowers and in remembrance of our beloved Grandpa, who donated to countless organizations and programs, a donation to your favorite charity in memory of him is appreciated. It will serve as a testament to his life, reflecting his impact on those who were privileged to have known him.
Grandpa was a beacon of kindness and love and will forever be in our hearts. Those that knew him are forever changed for the better because of him.
