Michael C Szany

                Michael C Szany, age 47, of Schererville, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 15 years Kelley Szany; children Emma, Cazmier, and Hunter; parents Dennis and Karen Szany; sisters Denise Szany, Dawn Szany, and Diane (Anthony) Buonadonna; niece and nephews Chrissy, Danny, and Dominic.

                Funeral services will begin with prayers at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave in St John, on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 9:15 am with a funeral mass to follow at St Maria Goretti Church at 10 am. Burial Memory Lane Cemetery in Crown Point. Friends may meet with the family on Tuesday at the funeral home from 2-8 pm.

                Mike was a 1991 graduate of Lake Central High School and a member of the 1990 Regional Football Championship team.  He attended Purdue University on a full athletic scholarship, playing Offensive Guard for the Boilermakers from 1991-1996. He was a volunteer for Lake Hills Fire Department and served on the Valparaiso Fire Department for many years.  Mike was a mechanic at U.S. Steel Gary Works (USW Local 1066) for the past fifteen years.

                Mike was a dedicated father, husband, son, and brother first and foremost. He treasured his three children and embraced every baseball or football throw, ice skating Sunday, campfire chat, Saturday game night, sharing another “cool” song from when “daddy was your age,” or a simple bedtime story at the end of the day. He was a gentle giant, friend to many, a lover of the Beatles, and a die-hard fan of the Bears and Blackhawks. He was known for his warmth, welcoming smile, and compassionate and kind spirit.  Mike cherished the times he spent with his dad fixing or repairing whatever was needed. He was a lover of telling a good story, sometimes more than once, but one that always brought laughter to those around him.  He could make friends and talk with anyone, even total strangers, setting them at ease with his personality.  Those who knew him and loved him will miss him dearly and will never forget the gift of his impact on their lives.
