Robert E. Schumann, 86, passed peacefully on March 12, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born in Hammond to parents Herbert and Helen (Helfen) Schumann and grew up in Griffith, IN.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marjorie, brother Herb (Kay), sister Marilyn Stein, and sister Gayelynn (Ray) Hengel and “brother” Al Yelich.
He leaves behind children Jeffery (Janet), Bart (Diane), Brett (Desiree), Tracy (Jon) Fisher and Douglas (Tiffany); 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert.
Bob was an electrician by trade and a member of Local 697 where he served 20 years as Assistant Business manager. He held offices in the state for various union related organizations. He served for 10 years on the board of Ivy Tech, including a term as president also serving in that capacity on Lake County Public Library.
Following his electrical career, he was responsible for creating and was the director of Building and Construction Resource Center which he led for 10 years before retiring.
In addition to his many work related involvements, he always had time to help friends and family which was always a great source of enjoyment for him.
After retirement, his biggest loves were traveling, and honing his woodworking skills, eventually building beautiful pieces of furniture. He and Marjorie spent 20 years crisscrossing the country visiting many sites in all 49 states. He continued to help family and friends, wherever his skills were needed.
Visitation will be at Fagen Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave., Saint John from 1-3p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2024 with a memorial service following.
