Susan Czapla, 70, of Dyer, passed away on September 27, 2024, after a courageous 6 year battle with cancer. She never gave up. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Czapla; brother Joey Czapla; nephew Tom Hadt.
Her surviving children are Michael Hernandez and Annie Hernandez. Siblings: Frank Czapla (Nelson Otano), Chris (Steve) Hadt. Nephews: Steve Hadt, Mike (Jen) Hadt, and Brian (Christine) Hadt.
Susan went to St. Stan’s, East Chicago Roosevelt, and then Purdue Calumet where she received a degree in Physical Education and Health. She retired from the School City of Hammond, where she was a Health teacher at Eggers Middle School. Susan was a parishioner and greeter at Saint John the Evangelist church.
Susan was active in sports in her younger years. She was a state champion in tennis and won many tournaments. She even participated in mixed doubles tournaments with her son. Susan played racquetball and participated on softball and soccer teams, winning many tournaments.
Susan was very involved in her children’s sports activities and events. She was their biggest supporter, never missing an event. She was the best grandma to her grand dogs, spoiling them whenever she got the chance.
Susan fought until the end, was loved, and will be missed by many.
Services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Saint John the Evangelist Day Chapel, located at 11301 W 93rd Ave Saint John, IN 46373, with visitation from 9:45am until the time of mass at 10:30am. Burial to follow at Saint John - Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Hammond, IN.
