Obituary

Susan M. Kunkemoeller, 66 of Griffith, was reunited with her best friend, her beloved “Champ” on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Sue, as she was known to many, was born July 4, 1956 in Chicago, IL to late Hilary J. And Lois (Joy) Gillespie.  She graduated from Munster High School in 1974, then went on to raise her family before continuing her education earning an associate’s degree.

She was the loving wife of late George “Champ” Kunkemoeller for 19 years before his passing in 1997.  She was also preceded in death by her dearest nieces Tricia (Skowronski) Dodson and Kimberly (Skowronski) Biesen.  She is survived by her children: Heidi Kunkemoeller (John), Jodie (Jeff) Sellers, Jamie (Matt) Dills, Tracy Kunkemoeller, Melissa (Kunkemoeller) Blevins, Joe Kunkemoeller; grandchildren: Cecilia, Jenna, Gracie, David, Bobby, Dylan, and Aiden; sisters Nancy Skowronski, Hillary Janie Hadley and Donna Copeland; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sue dedicated so much of her life to her 4 girls. From working as the athletic director at St. Mary’s School while her girls attended, to coaching their multiple teams.  She was a strong presence in their lives every step of the way.

Sue definitely made an impact wherever she went.  She managed the “cart shed” at Briar Ridge Country Club for many years.  She used her influence there to help many kids get their first jobs.  She made lifelong friendships, and created bonds that are still strong today.  She was incredibly proud of the time she spent there and the relationships she made.

There was nothing in this world Sue loved more than her grandchildren and her girls.  The only thing that ever came close was her love of music.  She was lucky to have seen the best bands of her time.  She shared her love of music with the people she loved.

She was never happier than when she was making memories traveling with her girls.  Whether it was a planned vacation, an impromptu road trip or taking them to see her “buddy” Graham Nash, she loved every minute with her family.

She was one of a kind, so it is fitting that her life be memorialized as only she would have wanted, with a true celebration in July. Expect details for “Suefest” in the coming weeks.
