With deep love and sadness, we announce the passing of Teddy (Ted) Evancic. Ted passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Ted was a resident of Whiting, Indiana, a devoted husband, talented hairdresser, and a cherished friend and family member to many.
Ted is survived by the love of his life, Walter Wachel, with whom he shared a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they built a home that welcomed everyone and reflected his carefree personality.
Ted’s parents, Mae and Gene Evancic preceded him in death. He is survived by his brothers Gene (Deb) Evancic and Ken (Jennifer) Evancic. Nieces: Jennifer (Steve) Dobrowolski, Melissa (John) DiDonato, Ashlee (Michael) Head, and Sydney Evancic. Nephew, Tyler Evancic. Great Nieces: Nikki Dobrowolski, Hannah DiDonato, Lily Gardner, Harlow Mae Evancic, Penny Lillian Evancic. Great Nephews: Ryan Dobrowolski, Noah DiDonato, and Maddon Eugene Evancic: his “BFF” of 46 years, Cindlu Steinhauer and his loving pets Lola, Sadie, Ramona, and Omar.
Ted was a graduate of Creative Hairstyling Academy in Highland, Indiana where he later was an instructor. He was the proud owner of “Statements” Hair Salon in Dyer, Indiana until his retirement. Ted was known by many of his clients as the “Hairdresser to the Stars”. After retirement, he served as the President of the “Friends of Whiting Library” volunteering his time to promote the library and hosting outstanding fundraisers.
Ted will be remembered as a loyal friend, a wonderful cook, a generous spirit, and someone who truly made the world a brighter place. He had a unique ability to connect with people and made each person feel valued and seen. His legacy of kindness, service and friendship will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Friends can meet with the family on Sunday, March 29, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave in St. John, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Sacred Heart Church, 1731 La Porte Ave in Whiting, IN. The Rosary being recited by his close friend, Michael Jones, will begin at 12:00 p.m., with eulogies following at 12:30 p.m. The mass will be at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Whiting Animal Shelter or the “Friends of the Library” at Whiting Library.
